There Will Be Blood

This was the first year in quite a few that I managed to see all five Academy Award Best Picture nominees. The one that has stuck with me the most - and has some of the most disturbing and gripping imagery for us as disciples to wrestle with - is Paul Thomas Anderson's oil epic, There Will Be Blood. Set at the turn of the last century, Anderson's film explores the nature of greed, and how we cloak it. His main way of doing this is through the character of Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day-Lewis. The character is audacious and breathtaking in his narrow-minded pursuit of wealth, and Day-Lewis' performance is the equal of any I have seen on film. But this is not a film review. The theme that is stunning in There Will Be Blood is that Plainview cloaks his greed in the veneer of a business (oil) that aims to benefit the whole community of Little Boston
