The pews were a relic from the fire that destroyed the South Melbourne Church of Christ in 1961. They were horrible. The black varnished old-fashioned seats did not fit the décor of the contemporary building. They were stained and charred from fire damage. The varnish became sticky on hot days and to stand up for a hymn involved the challenge of ungluing yourself from the pews.
So, soon after I started my student ministry at South Melbourne, I had a call from another church that was installing new seats, offering us their redundant pews. Wow! Just what we needed! I made the unilateral decision to accept the offer.
