A Doubting Fool

‘Without a doubt’ is a most virtuous phrase to be exclaimed as great testimony for those who have certainty or clarity of mind, for those who have found the answers to the questions they have been pondering. Or maybe to the audience of John’s Gospel, it’s a testimony of faith without need for proof of answers. Doubt, it would seem, has no place in a world where answers to long standing questions are craved after; where our environmental future looks bleak and social and political environments are unstable; where anxiety and fear dictates our concern for safety and security. Doubt in itself has never been seen as a virtue or helpful pathway to discovery

For a number of years now I have approached this incident with Thomas under the title "Honest Thomas". I call it an Australian reading of the text because I want to stick up for the underdog who always gets labelled. (We don't always refer to 'denying Peter'!)
Thomas only asked for what the other disciples had already received, and he was honest enough to voice his desire for more information/doubt.
