In 2005 Don Watson, formerly Paul Keating’s speechwriter, wrote a book in which he drew attention to the jargon (“weasel words”) used in industry and government (Death Sentences: How Clichés, Weasel Words and Management-Speak are Strangling Public Language). Examples of weasel words include expressions such as “bottom line”, “pushing the envelope” and ”going forward”. What he would think of the present government’s obscure but emotive use of “working families” and other Ruddisms can only be guessed!
