Taking Responsibility

A “Four Corners” program on the ABC late last year went under the heading,”Circle of Justice.” It showed an attempt by a magistrate, police prosecutor and several elders in country NSW to address the problem of recidivism in the indigenous community. The program followed the case of one young indigenous man and the attempt by all involved to help him accept responsibility for his actions in relation to the treatment of his young partner. This young man had been to court many times without having any real understanding of the judicial process. All he saw was “ the back of his lawyer’s suit.” Instead he faced a court in a local community hall, sitting in a circle of his elders, both men and women. In a way that only they can do, the elders faced the young man up to his misdemeanors and their consequences in very practical way … a way that he clearly understood.
