The Spirit as Gift Giver

Two of the enduring distinctives of Churches of Christ that I have always valued have been the ideas of the priesthood of all believers and mutual ministry. We’re all ministers and we’re all responsible in some way to minister to God, the fellowship and the wider community in mission. These ideas have, of course, been variously interpreted and implemented in the Australian context. In my experience growing up in Churches of Christ the idea of the priesthood of all believers basically translated to the “democracy of all believers” or the “roster of all believers” when it came to getting the tasks of local church life done. Whether a person had the requisite gifts or capacities necessary to accomplish certain tasks did not seem to be as important as nevertheless taking your turn.
