In 1999, Arthur Chawner, a member of the Annerley Church of Christ in Brisbane, was studying with Australian College of Ministries (ACOM). His course required that he do some practical work in his local church. This wasn’t easy for Arthur, as he had been blind since the age of 16 – or for Pastor Richard Pearce, who was the minister at the time. After much consideration with ACOM, it was decided that Arthur would commence a new ministry to the elderly and, especially, the house-bound members of the church. This was the beginning of the Young at Heart Group. Each person on his list would get a phone call at least once a fortnight. However, there are some who are contacted every week. It wasn’t long before Arthur felt it would be good to take some of the folk on outings, and the first trip was held in November 1999. This has grown into a popular event and now includes people from Sunnybank and Camp Hill churches as well as from Annerley. Edna Finlay has been working with him since the beginning of 2003, helping to organise the outings and sending out monthly letters together with copies of the church newsletter and Monthly Prayer Guide.
