“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
For the Mighty One has done great things for me,
And holy is his name.” (Luke 1:46-49, NRSV)
When I was in kindergarten, it was the height of every girl’s ambition to be chosen to play Mary in the Christmas nativity play. I was one of the ‘naughty’ children, and resigned myself to not being picked for such glories; however, the teacher decided that the fairest system was to choose children whose names actually matched the characters, if possible. Amazingly, we had plenty of Josephs in our class, but no Marys – and ‘Merryl’ was the closest, so I was in! My theatrical career has been all downhill from there, but this memory stirs within me each Christmas, and keeps me aware of the strange relationship that we Protestants have with Mary.
