Overlooking Cook Island

The breeding places for seabirds are so often the islands – small, rocky, bare, and windswept. So exposed to the elements, but here are the breeding colonies – here in these places of solitude. Terribly exposed, yet there is shelter too – from the thoroughfares and the predators of the mainland. The life that breeds there so often still frequents and still travels the great migratory routes of the world. Yet it’s in the solitude of these islands where new life begins and in infancy receives its early nurturing. Solitude, so often exposed and windswept, yet it is so necessary for new life.
