Many years of faithful Christian work on behalf of the unfortunate of India have earned an Order of Australia Medal for Shirley Macindoe (Epping, NSW). The citation reads: “For service to the international community through the establishment and support of Grace Ministries Overseas Aid”. The 23-year story of Grace Ministries Overseas Aid (GMOA) is a glowing example of what one lone person can achieve, with dedication and perseverance, even in one’s latter years. Shirley has always had a “burden” for the poor of India. She never married, and she has thus not had children of her own on which to lavish her love and concern. During the 1980s Shirley set about finding ways in which she could reach out to orphans in India. These enquiries led to opportunities of sponsorship via India-based organisations. She extended the scope by motivating others in Sydney to join her in sponsorship. In 1984, these efforts became formalised by the establishment of GMOA, with the objective of “meeting the practical and spiritual needs of the poor in India, particularly the disadvantaged and orphaned children”. GMOA has continued for 23 years, almost solely due to the enthusiasm and perseverance of one person: Shirley Macindoe.

Congratulations Shirley! Your OAM is well deserved. You have given many years of faithful service in helping some of the world's poorest children: "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans..." (James 1:27 NLT). May God continue to bless the work of GMOA. And thank you Dr Wrigley for bringing this to our attention.
