Its official: I'm out of touch with the ideals and aspiration of the majority of today's Western young people. As if now calling others 'the young people' and grey thickets of hair growing out of my ears wasn't enough of a give away, along came a survey of what 18-25s believe is their generation's most important life goals. Amongst other things, this Pew Research-USA Today report found that: 81% had "getting rich" as their "most important or second-most-important life goal"; 51% had "being famous" as their "most important or second-most-important life goal"; Twice as likely to admire an entertainer as a political leader. 55% "dream about getting rich," according to a Gallup Panel survey. "Developing a meaningful philosophy of life" dropped in importance from 85.5% in 1967 to 45% in 2005, according to an annual survey of college freshmen by the Higher Education Research Institute. Those who say it is "essential" or "very important" to be "very well off financially" grew from 41.9% in 1967 to 74.5% in 2005, according to the same annual survey.

Thanks once again for a challenging article Ash. I'm just about to head off on a weekend with 40 VCE students down in Red Hill. They are all taking part in a Christian Leadership course - and you've completely messed up one of my sessions! These students give me hope. Heaps of them are willing to serve Jesus with their lives - in spite of the pressures to do otherwise. They need encouragement from people like you Ash, to help them keep following their God given dreams and be saved from the illusions of our culture. I'll make sure they get access to this article.

I rated this article 10 it could have been 50 or 100 but it is of little value if it doesn't change my attitude or actions. Thanks Ash
