The first hint of dawn and they’re at it here on the island. The faintest glimmer of the new day and it begins. First, it’s the kookaburras ignoring the protestations of my feelings that clearly say that waking up is no laughing matter. Then the noisy flocks of rainbow lorikeets assailing the paperbarks and squabbling and chattering in the banksias. Cockatoos’ raucous cries ring out from the tallest branches of the Stradbroke Island pines. Then there’s the magpies, the currawongs and the oh so noisy miners. The night is finishing. A new day is about to be begin, and it’s greeted with all the enthusiasm of the very first dawn. A new joy each time a new morning comes, a new energy, a wonderful optimism that can’t wait for the sun to clear the horizon; it erupts with the very first lightening of the predawn darkness.
