Enduring Mission

Our home is perched on the corner of a busy intersection in the city of Lexington, Kentucky. The neighborhood is predominantly African American in a poor part of downtown. We share our house with a young married couple. Late one night our housemate returned home only to be aggressively propositioned by a prostitute working our corner. She intensified her efforts as our hapless friend made his way out of his car and into our home. Somewhere between the foot path and front door a loud rebuke was thrown from the darkness of the porch next door. “Leave him the *#$! alone. Them’s our people” With this reprimand, our neighbor managed to bring the sales pitch to a halt and, in the process, give us a hint that perhaps we were becoming liked. Somewhere in the midst of the tension and ambiguity of our over-educated, whiteness in such a neighborhood this comment of mustard-seed magnitude was joyfully received. It was a sign of acceptance.
