Vietnam: The Plight Of Minority Groups

Ethnic minority groups all over the world have been mistreated and are still regarded as a burden in some countries. This is true of Vietnam. Vietnam has 54 ethnic groups, of which the Kinh is the majority and the other 53 groups make up the minority groups, constituting about 13% of the population. The minority groups are spread from the North of the country down through the Central Highlands to the South. Although minorities comprise only 13% of the population, they constitute 29%t of Vietnam’s poor (2004). One theory as to why ethnic minorities remain significantly poorer than the Kinh is that they have generally much lower levels of education and substandard health services. The numbers of minority children staying in school drops as the level of education rises.
