Are You A “Praise Junkie” Parent?

It can never be wrong to praise your kids, can it? Some interesting research pushes us towards a “yes” to that question. Not that praise should be eliminated, but maybe we need to become more discriminating. The idea that we must do whatever will achieve positive self-esteem has become unquestioned dogma in some circles. Criticism has been replaced by ubiquitous, even undeserved, praise – on the grounds that anything potentially damaging to a kid’s self-esteem should be axed. For 10 years a research project has been carried out at Columbia University (USA), looking at the effect of praise on students in twelve New York schools. After a test, students were randomly divided into groups, then given a single line of praise with their results. Some were praised for their intelligence: “You must be smart at this.” The other group was praised for their effort: “You must have worked really hard.”
