A man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?' 'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! But if not, you can cut it down.' (Luke 13:6-9) Often - perhaps more often than I like to admit - I wonder whether I am hitting the mark in youth ministry! Am I a part of a 'successful' youth ministry? Is there growth? Are lives being transformed as they should? It is in these doubts that I sit with this little-known Lucan text. I welcome any text which encourages me to dig around young people and put manure on them! If nothing else, it at least gives me some sort of biblical mandate for some of the games nights I have run!!
