The Child In Our Midst

I have just returned from the Oceania Consultation of the Child Theology Movement. For four days a group from around Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands were led in conversation by three overseas guests. The essence of the Child Theology Movement is to take a major Christian doctrine, intentionally “place a child in the midst” of typical adult understandings of that doctrine, and then see if any impact on adult understanding is made by that process. We took the doctrine of creation as our starting point. Before entering into the theological experiment, we encountered two position papers: one about “The Pacific Child”; the other “The Australian Child”, which I presented. I based the paper on two recent research reports from the Australian Childhood Foundation: Every Child Needs A Hero (2006); Children’s Fears, Hopes and Heroes (2007). Let me share the main findings in these reports.
