The theme of this year's UNOH conference (July 27th-29th) was "fools for a revolution" and, seeing that I already fitted the first part of that theme, I purchased a UNOH cap that made me look like Fidel Castro's beardless nephew - hence fulfilling the "revolution" part of the deal. Upon arriving on the Friday, I was struck immediately by the increase in numbers from the previous year. All up, over 600 people were there on Friday, 700 on Saturday and close to 600 on Sunday morning. They heard a range of speakers who were challenging, encouraging and pounded away at many of our cultural and class assumptions about the Gospels and the poor. Michael Frost - and it's always uncharitable to single one speaker out - was remarkably good value at Surrender:07. His ability to dig down into Jesus' parables and unearth the treasure there was consistently of the highest order. Building on the theme of Jesus as the wise fool from his recently re-released Jesus The Fool (UNOH publications), he was able to show us our need for grace, repentance, obedience and mission to the poor.
