If Mary Magdalene had a publicity agent, they would have scripted the documentary screening on SBS this Sunday. Wittily entitled There's Something About Mary Magdalene, it explores the role and life of one of the Bible's most enigmatic figures. Was she a repentant prostitute? Was she - a la The Da Vinci Code - the wife of Jesus? Was she, as biblical scholar Esther de Boer suggests, so intrinsic to Christianity that "without Mary Magdalene, there would not have been Christianity?" Predictably, this is a documentary that is biased towards Mary Magdalene, which means in some respects that we learn important aspects about her. We are reminded that the Gospels are revolutionary in that they include her - a woman - as a witness of such crucial events as the crucifixion and the resurrection.
