Review: The Flying Scotsman

The Flying Scotsman, based on the real life triumphs and struggles of the Scottish world champion cyclist, Graeme Obree, is at times a refreshingly engaging biopic. When the film opens, we follow a hooded Obree (Johnny Lee Miller) into a dark forest as he decides to take his life; that and the flashbacks to a bullied childhood that both haunts and inspires him show us that we are observing a sporting champion whose demons run deep. There is the potential with this sort of subject matter that things can get quite grim indeed. Yet The Flying Scotsman balances the subject matter of depression and sport well.
