Exploring questions about the shape and focus of church is particularly important for us as Australians, and so I welcome the conversations around the emerging church movement. The emerging church conversation in North America is grappling with how church, gospel and culture relate, but Australia has its own challenges in these relationships. Compared to America where Puritans believed they were God’s agents to start a new country for God’s glory, Australia’s European beginnings were as a gaol settlement. The first ministers were military-appointed chaplains whose roles often included magistrate and moral policeman. Many convicts saw compulsory religious services and the harsh and condemnatory sermons as part of their punishment to endure.
