Why do we Christians have such a love/hate relationship with visual media? When you think about it, it really is a bizarre relationship. If the way we view TV and film were replicated in an actual relationship with another person, my advice to those two (unfortunate) people would be to "get out"! Let me give a few examples. On Saturday night, a few of us started talking about the negative (from Christian sources) buzz coming out regarding The Golden Compass, based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials books. Rumors - verified by mass e-mail, of course - have suggested that The Golden Compass will be wildly anti-Christian and is designed to get kids into self-proclaimed atheist Pullman's written work, thereby warping them. Hmmm...clever. Or not, as the case may be.

Craig,
Fantastic article! I couldn't agree more with your points.
The fact is that movies, and other visual medium, have become powerful points of contact in our culture. Christians can and should engage the world around us through the mediums that matter, and what better way to do this than to become reflective on the power of movies and television to shape. While around the water-cooler, discussing that great episode of whatever show was on last night, why not raise a question of the values being presented? Why not encourage the discussion to explore the impact of that show, as a way to find the points of contact for the gospel?
I have a member in my church who is probably a little too obsessed with movies (and I'm not talking about myself, although I run a close second). I'm hoping to use his passion/obsession to develop a movie & discussion outreach. Why not? He and I went to a special viewing of "Blade Runner" last weekend, and that is exactly what was happening at the viewing, albeit without the gospel intent.
