The sudden death of Australian film star Heath Ledger last week rattled fans, the entertainment industry and many others who pondered the abrupt end of life for the 28 year old actor and father. It also, predictably, started a media cycle that we are now becoming familiar with: shock, speculation, legacy and tidbits.
Let me explain. Shock is easy. Every part of the media that has immediacy was able to run the story (even before it was reliably confirmed). One FM station in Melbourne was almost proud to announce that "this has literally just come in 3 seconds ago". In other words, the quicker you get the news and the starker it is, the more it shocks. Details tend to soften blows. Frankly, in this era of consumers expecting immediate news, the media can hardly be blamed for running with big stories as soon as they can.
