What Is It About Third World Countries?

I would rather not have cause to mention East Timor again, except to give thanks that things have settled down and the fledgling nation is well on its feet. Alas, not yet. This week President Jose Ramos Horta, a Nobel Peace laureate, lies seriously injured in the Darwin Hospital following an assassination attempt; another on the life of Prime Minister Gusmao failed; more Australian troops have rushed to Dili; recriminations will go on, and the nation is unsettled again. I take particular interest in East Timor because some of my close friends fled for their lives from Dili to Adelaide in 1975, and since I visited there in 1994 while it was still under Indonesian rule. I am ashamed that successive Australian governments from Whitlam’s on approved of the invasion, regarding Indonesian rule as better for the region’s stability and for the Australian national interest.
