Review: The Black Balloon

It has been interesting to note (from the average film goer anyway) the reactions when I say I've just seen an Australian film. Many people look like they've just swallowed a lemon! However, not only have I just seen an Australian film, I've seen a great Australian film. As a matter of fact, director Elissa Down's debut feature, The Black Balloon, is a great film full stop. Set in the 1990s, the film opens in a golden light that comes with hot Australian summers. Yet very quickly we realise that not everything is golden with the Mollison family.
