Converting Feng Shui?

By : Lolita Seah, Coordinator COC Women’s Ministries, WA

Feng Shui (pronounced “fong shwee or shway” is traditionally an ancient Chinese practice that has found its niche in most Western countries, including Australia. Originally used as a method of “divining” where to build graves, it is now used to locate where to build sites, homes and cities. Feng Shui (literally translated as wind and water) aims to maximise the beneficial movement of chi (also spelled as qi or ki) – the invisible universal life force believed in some cultures to be present in one’s physical environment. It is in concert with "yin and yang" energies and believes in the interplay of five elements, namely the earth, water, fire, metal and wood. Devout Christians will be repulsed by Feng Shui, knowing its Taoist nature, its emphasis on luck and on humanity's pursuit of controlling their destiny, which is contrary to the biblical teachings of trusting the Father who adopted us as children through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 8:15, Gal 3:26, 4:4-7, Eph 1:5).
